The advantages of ensuring access to clean water extend beyond the realm of environmental benefits, particularly when considering the implementation of water projects. Boreholes yield a myriad of other advantages.
One significant improvement is in the livelihoods of vulnerable populations, especially women and children, who bear the disproportionate burden of limited access to clean water. In households lacking on-premises water access, women and girls often shoulder water collection responsibilities, accounting for approximately 80% of cases. The implementation of boreholes can result in up to 6 hours saved per day, freeing valuable time that can be redirected towards education, agricultural pursuits, and other productive tasks. This equates to approximately 275 working days per year, saving the equivalent of around 55 working weeks annually.
